In a strategic move to fortify its artificial intelligence prowess, tech titan Google has reportedly acquired Vizerai, an emerging startup based in Zurich, Switzerland. Specializing in AI model compression and cutting-edge computer vision algorithms, Vizerai’s acquisition was recently revealed by the Swiss business journal Neue Zürcher Zeitung, confirming that the deal was finalized in February.

Vizerai, self-described as “pioneers in efficient, real-time, and scalable deep learning solutions” engineered for edge computing, has been at the vanguard of developing industry-leading model optimization techniques and adaptive solutions for embedded vision applications. Prior to the acquisition, the company employed a workforce of approximately 15 individuals.

According to insights from Vizerai’s former website, the company’s core expertise centered on the development of advanced computer vision algorithms tailored for object detection and tracking in smart city infrastructure. Leveraging rapid processing of video streams into anonymized data within milliseconds, Vizerai adhered to stringent privacy protocols, ensuring that no personal information or footage was stored or transmitted.

Vizerai’s collaboration with the Swiss government in 2021 highlighted its commitment to public safety, deploying AI-powered surveillance systems in major cities to monitor crowd movements and potential security threats. Furthermore, the company boasted partnerships with multinational corporations like Siemens, underscoring its versatility and appeal across diverse industries.

While Google and Vizerai have yet to officially confirm the acquisition, Neue Zürcher Zeitung reported that the deal was notified to the European Commission earlier this month. Notably, Vizerai’s co-founders have not transitioned to Google; however, several key engineers have reportedly joined the tech giant. Vizerai’s extensive patent portfolio, particularly in the domains of AI model compression and vision technology, further heightens the strategic significance of the acquisition.

This acquisition dovetails seamlessly with Google’s anticipated rollout of advanced AI capabilities slated for integration into Android 14 later this year. Moreover, Vizerai’s advancements in vision-based technology present promising synergies with Google’s ambitious augmented reality ventures, with potential applications spanning across various Google products, including enhancements to features such as Google Lens and Face Unlock, propelled by Vizerai’s sophisticated object recognition and facial analysis algorithms.
